What are the differences in home care hospital beds and what should I look for in a hospital bed? There are 3 main classifications of home care hospital beds: Manual, Semi-Electric and Fully Electric.
Manual Hospital Beds: Manual Hospital Beds are adjustable (head, feet and entire bed) they require adjustment via a hand crank. Manual Beds are a good and economical option if the bed doesn't need to be adjusted often and there is a caregiver that is capable of making these manual adjustments.
Semi Electric Hospital Beds: Semi-Electric Beds are adjustable by motors and a hand control. Semi-Electric hospital beds typically have 4 buttons on the hand control. Head Up - Head Down and Foot Up - Foot Down. The entire bed height can be adjusted by a manual hand crank adjustment. Semi-Electric beds are the most popular because of the lower cost (than Full-Electric).
Full-Electric Hospital Beds: Full Electric beds are completely adjustable electrically and are typically identified by 6 buttons on the hand control. The fully electric beds typically have 3 motors that control the head, feet and entire bed. Both the Semi-Electric and Full Electric Hospital beds have back up hand crank options in case of a power outage. The fully electric hospital bed is a great option for individuals that require a lot of care as it allows the caregiver to easily adjust the bed height to get complete access to the patient.
